  • We are occasionally able to offer bursaries covering up to 50% of the cost of a subsidised rate stay. You must be living in Scotland. Please apply online or write to us at hello@turadh.org.uk letting us know a few details about your circumstances.

  • Yes! We have lots of partnerships with community and charity organisations across Scotland. Get in touch with us at hello@turadh.org.uk and we can explore what might work best for you.

  • Bookings at Taigh Whin and Nead Bernera run for 7 days. Bookings at Feada Coille are sometimes available in low seasons for shorter periods (minimum stay 3 nights).

  • Once you have made your financial contribution your stay is confirmed. You may cancel at any time but the money you have contributed is 100% non-refundable.

If you need to change the date of your stay this will be subject to availability. We will do our best to help but reserve the right to levy an administration charge of £50 for any amendments to your booking. Amendments are not usually possible within 12 weeks of your arrival date.

  • Guests will usually be asked for £100 deposit, which is returnable within 7 days of your departure provided the property is left in good condition, with all food and rubbish removed at the end of your stay, and the house rules adhered to. This is returnable within 7 days of departure provided the property is left clean and tidy, with all food and rubbish removed, and the house rules adhered to. If you do not show up for your stay, or if you cancel within 12 weeks of your arrival date, your deposit will automatically be transferred into our bursary fund.

  • A high-speed internet connection is available at Taigh Whin and Nead Bernera. Feada Coille has a lower-speed connection, ok for basic browsing but unsuitable for streaming or uploads.

Please be aware that all our buildings are very rural and the internet service can be unpredictable.

  • A car is recommended not only for getting to us but also for making the most of nearby places to visit.

Public transport is very limited in these parts and taxis are expensive. We have had guests arrive by bike and we take our hats off to them; it’s not an easy option.

It is possible to take a train to Kyle and a taxi to Glenelg (for Taigh Whin or Nead Bernera) or a train to Strathcarron and a taxi to Shieldaig (for Feada Coille) but the taxi may be expensive.

You can get a voucher for a taxi between Kyle - Glenelg for £5 by following the instructions here. If you choose to do this, we recommend buying food and anything else you may need for your stay at co-op in Kyle and then asking the taxi to pick you up there.

  • Provided the main applicant is present throughout the stay you are welcome to have a friend or family members join you. The house capacity must never be exceeded.

We ask that any additional guests who are not working for the charity or community sector in Scotland make a £100 contribution to the Turadh bursary fund.

  • Unfortunately we are not able to accommodate dogs, and are unable to make any exceptions, except for service dogs.

  • We do not have any special facilities for babies or children, but they are welcome to stay. There are plenty of games, puzzles and children's books available.

  • Heating is free of charge in all buildings.

Taigh Whin and Feada Coille both have wood-burning stoves. A small amount of starter wood is provided, enough for a fire on your first night, and there are plenty of firelighters and matches. Extra wood can be purchased from local shops.

  • Yes, there is a washing machine and electric drying rack in all the buildings and laundry liquid is provided.

  • There is an EV charger for use by guests staying at Taigh Whin or Nead Bernera. We ask for a contribution of £20 per charge.

There is no EV charger at Feada Coille.

  • Regrettably we are not fully DDA compliant. However both Taigh Whin and Nead Bernera are on a single level with step-free access. Feada Coille is also on a single level but accessed by three steps up.

Please feel free to get in touch at hello@turadh.org.uk with any specific access queries.

  • Winter Travel and Extreme Weather

Turadh properties are all located in the Highlands where weather can be dramatic and challenging at time.

The main roads into Shieldaig and Glenelg are well-maintained year round, but there can be days when conditions worsen rapidly due to snow, ice and high winds, and in these instances we do not recommend travel to and from our houses for either our staff or guests. Our priority is always to keep our staff and guests safe.

In the event of extreme weather causing dangerous driving conditions as advised by Bear Scotland and the Met Office, the following will apply:

    • It is the responsibility of guests to plan and prepare their journey carefully. Please ensure that your car is fully prepped for winter travel (if relevant) and check Met Office weather warnings along with Bear Scotland traffic updates. 'Skye and Inverness Road Watch' is a useful Facebook page for travel updates.

    • We will do our utmost to have our buildings prepared for guests by 4pm on the first day of their stay. In extremely rare cases our staff may be unable to safely access the properties to prepare them for guest arrival. In this instance we will postpone your stay and offer an alternative date that is mutually agreed.

    • Taigh Whin and Nead Bernera only - The Mam Ratagan Pass into Glenelg is gritted in winter, but often not until mid-morning. Take great care on this road at all times but particularly at night and early morning. Gritter lorries can be tracked here https://www.traffic.gov.scot/gritter-tracker

Please be aware that the road beyond Taigh Whin to the Ferry Shore Station is not cleared in extreme weather and to avoid driving that stretch in snowy and icy conditions.

    • Feada Coille only - The final road into Feada Coille - Allt an Dubh - is steep and can be icy at times. Please take extreme care here in very cold and wintery conditions.

  • Turadh is a not-for-profit social enterprise. Funds from all our stays go towards covering housekeeping costs and providing bursaries for those who need them.

  • Almost certainly yes! Leave yourself plenty of driving time.
