Nead Bernera, Glenelg

A modern interpretation of the traditional Scottish bothy, Nead Bernera offers comfortable accommodation for 1 or 2, in a way that’s designed to connect you to the wild landscape all around. Though small, this impeccably designed cabin surprises most visitors with its cosy comfort.

Nead Bernera means the nest on Bernera beach, and this place is all about being among the birds. Humans nesting in this safe spot can expect to wake to the sound of the song thrush, sit on the deck and spot warblers, stonechat or goldfinch, and then wander across the beach to see cormorants, oystercatchers and maybe even an eagle.

Nead Bernera sits next to Taigh Whin at the edge of Glenelg, a remote and beautiful Highland village that wraps itself around a sheltered bay with mesmerising views across to the Isle of Skye. The village boasts a fabulous pub, a well-stocked shop, a cafe and a vibrant community centre that often hosts local bands. It is best known for its tiny ferry - the only remaining hand-operated turntable ferry in the world - which takes villagers and tourists across the sea to Skye throughout the summer months. With virtually no light pollution, Glenelg enjoys dazzling night skies and in winter it is one of the best places in the UK to see the Northern Lights.

“The most peaceful place I’ve ever been. Nature, ecology, quiet, space, historic landscapes lightly touched by human influence, seals belowing across the waves, restoration, contemplating the florescent purple bellies of jellyfish, 11pm sunsets, respite from burnout.”

— Nead Bernera Guest

“Wow… my whole body responded to this special landscape this morning! What a place to breathe deeply and be nurtured.”
